One of the most common questions I get asked, "I know I need videos for my business, but when is the best time to make them?"
Even though there's $10k cinema camera behind me,
I still just recorded this video right on my computer. Don't over-think it.
The answer is explained in more detail in the video above, but for those of you that want to get to the point...the best time to make videos is NOW. If you can hire a video professional, that's the always the best avenue to take, but if you aren't quite ready to make that investment, you can still be producing content. The trick is...don't try to make your version of "Citizen Kane" just get a little light on you, clean up the room a bit, set your laptop or phone up at eye level, and sit close to the mic. Keep it simple, keep it clean, and keep it relatively short. You don't need a big investment to get started, but you do need to get started.
Creating your own content now will prepare you for when the time comes to hire a pro to help you create better videos and more compelling imagery that moves your clients to action. And even after you hire a pro, keep making your own content! Let the slick, glossy production identify you as the pro. Let that video explain who you are and why your product is the best. Use that as your calling card for future growth and to engage with new potential clients and customers. Then make your own videos to update everyone on new products or news related to your brand. Post everything to YouTube AND Facebook and Instagram. What? You don't have those channels? What are you waiting for?! Get started! You want a buffet of content...Well produced videos should be the main course, while your own videos can be the side dishes. And when you are shooting your bigger brand videos, ask your pro to shoot some smaller videos while you are at it! Maximize your time with the pro while you are lit well and have the best gear available!
Here's another related tip...If you had your nephew help you make a video a few years back with your camcorder...it's time to take that down. That old video is probably doing more damage than it is doing good. Does it still represent your brand? Probably not so just go to your YouTube settings and set it to unlisted. Or if it's REALLY bad now...take it down entirely. Sometimes no video is better than bad video. And the new videos you can make with your webcam or iPhone don't have to be 'bad' videos if you keep it simple. So when is the best time to start? Today! Don't over-think it, just get started. If you decide you need help, you know where to find me.
